This has been happening for a while but George W Bush has opened the flood gates of ruin on this once great nation. While still powerful unless we do an about face in the next presidency we will be mirroring the decline of the British Empire.
The neo-cons think we can dominate the world with the sword, but whether it is violent resistance like the Iraqi’s or like India, when they ended English domination with non-cooperation, we cannot dominate the world.
So while the dinosaur neo-con masks their weakness behind an expensive technologically advanced military they pursue their increasingly unrealistic imperial ambitions while the war profiteers line their pockets with the tax payer’s money and our fellow citizen’s bodies. They try to stifle dissent by weakening our Constitution.
They have lost the capacity for empathy. These neo-cons can’t see through the eyes of others to create a world of accommodation rather than strife. What once was noble ideals of a great nation have become empty clichés, used to justify the pillaging the treasury and the subjugation of the people. Near the end of greatness there is just a raw lust for power and money.
They have created massive debt to countries like China. They have let our infrastructure crumble. 46 or so million Americans with no health care. Education is increasingly out of reach for many of our citizens. They have ended genuine debate by letting a few media giants gobble up the communication outlets with the likes of Faux Noise, the Rush O’Riley’s and the rabble they are on air with. We now have a political cabal that can’t separate personal gain from the common good, like Trent Lott quitting the Senate so he can pimp for special interests before the new ethics laws take effect.
The top one percent of the population has acuminated more wealth than the bottom ninety percent put together. America spends more on our military than the rest of the world combined. We have not seen such inequitable distribution of wealth since the depression of the 1930’s. The working class American has been abandoned to fend for themselves in shark infested waters.
Mr. Bush’s vetoed the SCHIP bill for education, job training and health programs and in the same day signed a bill giving the pentagon $471 Billion for the fiscal year. He said it was the principle of providing federalized health care. Although I don’t see him or any of the others republicans who voted with him, opting to pay for their own health care, the taxpayer does it for them.
Most of the American people care more about who won dancing with the stars Tuesday than who and how the next group of politicians who will be elected will run this Nation. My father, who fought in WWII in the pacific and helped build us up to the greatest nation on earth, certainly was the greatest generation.
I ask myself will it be my generation full of complacency and apathy, that may be the last generation of the Late Great Nation we call America, as we slide toward the abyss of mediocrity.
The sun has not set on us but the twilight is here.
Peace and Liberty through intelligence, strength and integrity.
