Peace Process in Nepal at Critical Juncture

Offering reaction to the Maoists latest move, senior Cabinet Minister Ramchandra Poudyal mentioned to local media that, "it comes as a big surprise that a party that raised the demand for Constituent Assembly (CA) poll for a decade wants to run away from the election at the final stage."

He also stated, "to see the Maoists quitting the government and soon after, vowing to disrupt the CA poll, showed it was a pre-planned move to escape the poll."

Earlier, the Maoists Ministers submitted their resignation to the PM Koirala through Minister Poudyal by quitting the almost 6 month old government, and jeopardizing the one and half year long peace process.

One the same day while giving a public speech at an open theatre, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, a Senior Maoist Minister in the cabinet, expressed that they will capture the regime soon with the help of their planned revolution.

It was indeed a serious violation of understanding between Eight Party Alliance (EPA) by the Maoists in the name of fulfilling their so-called 22 point demands. It clearly indicates that they are still unbending in their original hardline philosophy of communism.

The strategy of 'Prachanda Path' adopted by the Maoists is designed to make Nepal a Maoist state. This strategy clearly spells out their desired objective with the vision to establish a communist set-up in the country.  Many Maoist leaders at different levels are openly expressing that they are fully committed to a strategy adopted by the Maoists leadership to make Nepal a Maoists (communist) state.

No one should overlook the reality that they have not abandoned "Prachanda Path" even when they pretend that they are fully committed to ongoing peace process.

The Maoists know very well that if they evict the Monarchy from Nepal they can destabilize the situation easily to clear all other domestic obstacles. As former US Ambassador James F. Moriarty referred to, the present strategy adopted by Nepalese Maoists is based on October Revolution of Russia: Promising the people and concerned authorities to hold the CA poll, but at the same time, evicting the Monarchy by different pressure tactics, and afterward, physically eliminating all other opponents by disrupting the CA poll.

They are moving almost in same way as the Russians moved a long time ago to achieve their desired goals. The Maoists has failed to realize that the Russian revolution era and present scenario is drastically changed. Achieving the sustained success through utilizing old and outdated strategy is virtually impossible in a modern age. However, we should not also forget that the chances of success for the Maoists are slim, but the ultimate sufferer will be the country and the people with the Maoists worthless ambition.

Therefore, it is an alarming stage to all peace loving people who believes on democracy and freedom. In fact, the Maoists wanted to utilize the present conducive environment as a platform to move ahead to achieve their ultimate goals.

They have not even imagined that they are becoming increasingly unpopular each day in Nepalese society  because of their wrong doing. Handfuls of people are supporting them either to fulfill their own vested interest or due to fear of YCL. The YCL's brutality and terrorism cannot soon be forgotten, or even in the future.

The Maoists are becoming frustrated with the ground reality they face in the upcoming election. It is indeed a shame on them that they claim themselves as one of the strong political powers. They are virtually begging their allies for some seats on the Constituent Assembly without facing a poll.

The world has witnessed that the Monarchy in Nepal at the present stage is playing a passive role from all dimensions. Despite the numerous revengeful and humiliating actions from the EPA, the institution is remaining reluctant to do anything that will jeopardize the upcoming election. That may be due to their not wanting to disrupt the peace process. Otherwise the institution, which takes credit of creating this country and ruling for such a long period, can have the ability to disrupt any sort of process.

It has become a joke that the Maoists along with SPA are blaming the monarchy for whatever wrong is happening in country -- and without any proof.

For example, the Madhes agitation was instigated by the Maoists by their action in Lahan, Gaur and other parts of country. In the past, the Maoists Supremo Prachanda blamed the Monarchy several times for creating a conspiracy, however, he was unable to present evidence when he was told to present it. This time, they even used purely innocent civilian targets to blame the monarchy for hatching such cruel terrorist acts in the capital city. That was also just before they launched their recent agitation program. Still, they blame the Monarchy, but again they failed to prove wrong allegation to right (sic).

Meanwhile, visiting British International Development Minister, Shahid Mallik, has expressed disappointment over the Maoist decision to pull out of the government. The concern shown by the UN Mission in Nepal, European Union and other actors is also there, but is not enough to put pressure on these cruel and arrogant inhuman elements.
