I have heard and read so much reporting of dark tidings, so much gnashing of teeth over the big AFL CIO break-up. But perhaps there is some light in this purported darkness.

In the biological world, in the world of the media, diversity is good. It's healthy.

Maybe, just maybe it will be good to have a few perspectives and a few megasources of political funding from unions. Maybe if democratic politicians have to earn support from a few different union sources, they will be more likely to act like real labor supporting democrats, instead of selling out on issues like CAFTA, bankruptcy, college tuition aid for low income families.

One reason that unions are in decline is that major industries where unions thrived have been devastated by deals politicians have made, including centrist Bill Clinton, like WTO, NAFTA and most recently, CAFTA.

I have to wonder if the damage the DLC and sell-out faux democratic centrists have perpetrated has been encouraged by the support of John Sweeney's mega-union. It may not be Sweeney's intention, but just the bigness of the process.

Maybe the break-off union groups will take a harder tack in dealing with Democrats in congress who don't deserve a nickel's worth of support from Democrats.

Maybe". it could be good for there to be a diversity of unions, each making decisions on supporting local and national candidates. Maybe the smaller break-off groups, who still will have substantial funds to dole out, will decide to invest in different approaches to taking back America from the extreme right. Maybe they will invest more in taking back the media. Maybe they'll fund more policy promotion organizations like Center for American Progress and Center for America's Future.

Maybe" the break-off unions will achieve one of the primary goals they've mentioned""recruiting millions of more union members-- members who will vote for union interests, for progressive and left leaning politicians" along with friends and families.

Maybe we don't need any more doomsayers telling us that the sky is falling in when a change occurs. The bottom line is that things are not and have not been working the way they've been for the past few years. We need things shaken up. We need cleanup and we need it soon. Let's wait to see how the new leaders do their jobs and lead.
