Iraq's occupation caused our defeat in the Global War on Terror

By       (Page 1 of 1 pages)   2 comments
I picked up a comment strand from the Louisville, Ky. daily paper this morning and encountered the following quotation from a writer with the screen name Kat.

Please libs, present your plan for ridding the world of terrorists, a world of peace and harmony. I really want to know how to accomplish this.

I decided to respond to Kat because the comment seemed to reflect the thinking of those sincere and serious people who are anxious about the lack of progress in Iraq, but who are giving the President slack because they don't see an alternative strategy or understand the full extent of the damage the Occupation of Iraq is causing to our legitimate objectives in the Global War on Terror.

Kat, I will this once overlook the term libs and take it as an abbreviation rather than an insult.

Your linkage of a world of peace & harmony to ridding the world of terrorism is unwarranted. We are conceived in sin and born into corruption, so the quest of a world of peace and harmony is utopian fantasy.

On the question of protecting ourselves against Islamicist terrorism, it must be clear to everyone who is not on the payroll of a war profiteer that the assistance of the law abiding, religious and decent Arab masses is essential to success and victory in the Global War on Terror. This is because these people want to help suppress terrorists if given the chance to do so.

After the 9/11 attacks, they were sympathetic to us and were willing to join us a mutually beneficial attack on the human hyenas who are responsible for bombing peaceful civilians in NYC, Bali, Istanbul, and now in Baghdad. After all, even after the futile and needless loss of 3,000 young kids in Iraq, the Arabs are the ones bearing the heaviest losses in the incessant terror attacks in Iraq and other countries.

The American invasion of Iraq turned the Arab massses against us. They used to like America and were eager to help us in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy. Since we invaded Iraq, they view us as the enablers of the terrorists. We are patently not strong enough to suppress the terrorists militarily, we are willing to subject them to terror and destruction and we want their oil.

Our only hope for victory in the Global War on Terror is do what we should have done all along:we must win the hearts and minds of the Arab masses.

We need the help of the religious, even fundamentalist Arab masses in drying up terrorists' funding sources, in discouraging recruitment of new terrorists, in identifying and apprehending terrorists and in changing public opinion so that young Arabs will not see terrorism as freedom fighting.

The cowardly and immoral strategy of subjecting the Arab masses to the horrors of urban warfare to compensate for our impatience in capturing the terrorists has destroyed our prospect for victory in the Global War on Terrorism.

The only hope for recovering the initiative and perhaps winning the Global War on Terror lies in immediately stating our intention of removing our forces from Iraq; stating realistic and quickly attainable goals to be accomplished as the basis for withdrawal; and leaving immediately upon accomplishing these goals.

Hopefully the patriotic American bullies supporting Bush Administration tactics have not already so damaged American credibility as to make working with the Arabs impossible in the future.
