In a shameless act of self promotion, I am informing all you bloggers that my new radio show will be on the air on Sundays at 11AM EST on KPHX Phoenix. You can stream it at
http://novamradio.com/. The topic for this week will be the Presidential election process and will include a discussion about the wisdom of our Founding Fathers. George Washington and others abhorred the idea of political parties and partisan politics. That is why they decided that the office of the President was far too important to allow for such nonsense as a popular election. They knew that when they formed the Electoral College.
The idea was that the elected state legislators would appoint electors who were capable of deciding who would be the best qualified to be POTUS. It is not so much that they did not trust the PEOPLE. The preamble of the Constitution refers to We The PEOPLE. The Founders did not trust those who would seek that office who were not qualified yet had the power and money to seek the office. The idea was that the office of the POTUS should not be chosen by voting in a popularity contest.
Since the Electoral College became popularly elected, the only consequence of that archaic process has resulted in a winner take all mathematical aberration that has the unintended consequence of electing those who lose the popular vote ala Bush v. Gore. But, the original idea makes a lot more sense than the current system.
We all know that the public has been so mislead by the powerful special interests including the MSM that they often vote against their interest. It is not the fault of the PEOPLE. It is inherent in the human condition that the powerful will exploit the powerless. Just look around the world and you will see the cruelty inflicted upon people within their own nations. The only way to have prevented that from happening was allowing for a non-partisan group of informed citizens (Electors) to choose a President that was not seeking the office for his or any other's benefit.
The MSM has fed us a bunch of lies about the wisdom of the Electoral College. It is not the PEOPLE that the Founders did not trust. It is the politicians and special interests that they were trying to control. Given the power of the MSM and special interests, it would be wise to go to a popular vote or uniform proportional representation for all states in electing the Electoral College. If it were up to me, I would do what the Founders originally intended. It is clear that we have not done well in choosing our Presidents.
