Independent Judges Need Not Apply
Sign Outside Bush Justice Department.
Can we once and for all can the idea that Democrats are the party of activist judges?!
I realize it made for a swell talking point with which to bring out the conservatives who believe a Democrat president would only select judges who would carry out the communist agenda of the far-left loons; Democrats who believe the Constitution wants to be a living, breathing political creature. The broadcast Lords of Loud have made the fear of "activist judges" a lynchpin in their "fear anything and everything left of far right" daily diatribe.
Sure the "Clinton fired all the prosecutors when he took office" canard has already flown down from the RNC. No matter that George Bush I did the same. Unless there's impropriety or performance breakdowns, prosecutors are meant to stay the term of the President. Not fired for political expediency. Not fired because party politicos are unhappy that justice has superceded partisanship.
Gonzalez chief of staff D. Kyle Sampson has been sacrificed, just as Scooter Libby took the fall for his boss (and nearly everyone else in this White House). Expect a deluge of Medals of Freedom to be hung around these dearly departed, sacrificial lambs in the near future.
But the Attorney General stays on. Accountability, which Gonzalez purports be taking, stops at the Department head's office. Not in the office, you understand. Up to someone else's water's edge. In the Bush administration, the receptionist who lets Mr. Accountability get past her desk will be the first to go. Hey, it took five years of deadly mistakes and untold thousands of lost lives before Rumsfeld was shown the door. And that needed a Democratic takeover for the President to see the writing on Rummy's separation papers.
New Mexico prosecutor, David Iglesias wasn't investigating Democrats fast enough for Sen. Pete Domenici(R, NM). Bye-bye-Dave. U.S. Attorney Carol Lam presided over indictments against Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R, CA). Don't let the door hit ya on the way out, Carol.
I'm sure the Founding Fathers felt that prosecuting political opponents and going soft on criminals on your team would make for a justice system that made escaping the English motherland worthwhile.
Afraid of activist judges? Don't vote Republican.
Wonder which right wing talk show will toss that one out today.
