Why an action link first? It's because our words are useless unless they mobilize people to take some immediate action in direct response. Unless the central goal of all progressive punditry is to engage more people to DO something themselves, then what is the point . . . really? And if the modestly patient reader will bear with us for just a couple of paragraphs, we will show you how you can increase the effectiveness of your own activist efforts in an incredible, new way.
Polls are now saying that a majority of Americans (50 to 44%) would favor impeaching the president IF he lied about Iraq. So our work is done, right? Until that is a proven fact to those 50%, let's not kid ourselves. To impeach the president NOW, a substantial number of members of the president's own party must turn on him in a dramatic way. And given the bias of the media coverage so far, as a practical matter that will happen only if 1) a major new "smoking gun" emerges (as from the Patrick Fitzgerald probe), or if 2) larger numbers of us communicate personally with them as their constituents to demand it. Since we can't rely on the first, we must concentrate on the second, and encourage everyone else we know to do the same. WE ARE the true majority! If even 1% of us were to actually speak out on a regular basis, miracles will happen. The energy of a vast, grassroots communication web will be powerfully effective!

Let's take a look and see how much we can learn from what just happened with the recent demonstrations against the war. Estimates of attendance in DC ranged from 250,000 to 600,000. Yet the war goes on unabated. Some very determined, sincere and articulate people spent a month camped out in a ditch in Texas. Still the war continues, and will continue until members of Congress find the courage to oppose it. What will give them that courage?
All they know in Washington is that a bunch of people showed up for a demonstration and then went home. They aren't even sure of exactly how many protesters (if any) were their own constituents. One of the most positive aspects of the event was the personal visits to members of Congress. Even so, some members of Congress were probably thinking, "There are twelve of you here today; that won't change my life in any upcoming election." This is why it is SO necessary for everyone who participated in the demonstrations (in DC and elsewhere) to follow up personally with their members of Congress by email, phone and fax. And we have a dedicated action page for that, too.

Did you notice how the corrupt corporate media gave as much coverage to the facade of a counter-demonstration as they did to the overwhelming majority in opposition? There weren't even enough pro-war people out there to fill a medium-sized PR agency. (This is one of the right wing's favorite tricks: to draw a false equivalence between two things that are grossly out of proportion.) You heard it from Bush after the Katrina debacle when he said, "We'll find out what went right . . . and what went wrong." HELLO! . . . NOTHING went right! And you heard it again in the line about how they were going to figure out what went wrong at the "city, state, and federal levels," always placing the 800-pound gorilla of incompetence and irresponsibility last -- as if it's an unimportant afterthought.
There are two ways to vote for the current administration and their ongoing policies. One way is to speak actively on their behalf, but there aren't many people doing that; they're just loudmouths. The way that most people support Bush is by failing to speak out at every opportunity. What happened to all of those people in DC? Did they just evaporate until the next march? Why do we not have at least 500,000 submissions already at the action pages above? If we were to deliver a million personal emails to members of Congress from their own constituents, or a like number of phone calls, they might start hiding in the cloakrooms, but they'd get the message. So why aren't we doing it right now?
