Lets talk about two laws that really need a fresh view. Lets talk about that horrid ruling by the Nazi side of the Supreme Court. Why five old men who have never borne a child and never will, are deciding the fate of a law that should be a woman’s prerogative is one of the flaws of our judicial system. I suppose every system will have it’s flaws, but I wonder if any of them actually sat down with a number of women and actually talked about it with them. When I first heard the headline, I said to my wife that “I can understand that”. I was promptly ripped a new one. “What if the mother is bleeding to death during a breeched birth?” She asked. “What if the mother’s blood pressure or other vital signs are dropping and she’s about to die? What if the baby is so abnormal that it would live a short painful few days before it died anyway? Don’t you understand that there are a thousand things that could warrant an abortion like that?”

Now do you see why I wonder if those justices ever talked to women about the choice they have just mandated on them? Who gave them that right? Why do rich old men feel like it’s their responsibility to judge the morality of a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy? This law does not take into account the woman’s health in any way. I believe that when any woman dies because of this ruling, that these justices should be charged with murder. I know that won’t happen, but a notice should be sent with the woman’s biography and pictures of her grieving family, or maybe a video of her dying. Just a thought, a terrible thought.

Let’s get back to the reason old rich men get to decide morality for the rest of us. Most of the time it’s tied to religion. Religion... there are many wrongs that hide behind that word. Half the deaths during the span of human life on Earth could probably be blamed on religion. Today that is about the only reasoning that still can hide a person’s true motives. “It’s against my religion”. “It says so in the Bible”. “It’s against God’s wishes”. People are referred to as “ungodly” and the old standby “satanic”. Between God and Satan, they can come up with enough reasons to do just about anything. That’s why our founding fathers separated Church and State. When they wrote the Constitution, it wasn’t too long ago that they were burning people at the stake for witchcraft. Most of them were women. It seems that religion does a number on women. That’s why I wonder why so many woman are religious. Who knows?

The other law people don’t understand is gun control. Look, if that crazed lunatic in West Virginia wanted to gun people down, he didn’t have to buy the guns from a gun shop. In fact, most guns bought by criminals are bought by other criminals on the street. They buy them from the trunks of cars, in motel rooms, or from a buddy that needs the bucks. I agree that a better back ground check could be done, with stays in a mental health clinic a disqualifying condition, but stopping the sale of guns altogether is really not going to solve anything. We have already banned assault rifles and I wouldn’t mind if they took the 50 calibers off the shelves, but I own a gun. The reason I own a gun is because cops are government workers. I also own a gun because there are crazy people out there and they are getting crazier everyday.

Meanwhile this has been the bloodiest day since the “surge” was begun. They are wholesale killings on the streets of Baghdad that make what happened here yesterday look almost normal. Car bombs don’t particularly care who they kill. Children are easier to kill because they can’t run as fast as grown ups. I had one gem of a human being put a comment on one of my articles when I compared Virginia to Iraq, and the person said that Arabs don’t count against Americans. I believe that our government believes that too. They look at Arabs, Blacks, and poor people in the same way that kings looked at serfs. I also believe that the Republican Right Wing fundamentalists don’t believe in god any more than anyone else. They use God as an excuse to kill people, the same way militant Arabs use Allah. What we have to remember is that people who read articles such as this one are the voice of reason. You may not believe this, but there are more of us, than there are of them. That’s why they have to have such a tight reign on us. They might have the money, but we have the numbers. Slowly but surely, we are coalescing.

We can agree do disagree on some things, but we should never lose sight of the fact that the right has our nations government. Until we get it back, there is going to be more death and carnage. We have to hang together, else we will hang separately. I think Benjamin Franklin said that. Just keep the faith, the country is starting to wake up. Be part of it, it’s no fun just watching.
