Alberto Gonzalez had to resign. He no longer had the trust of the Senate in particular, but more than that, he no longer had the trust of the American People. I feel for Alberto Gonzales. This is the way I am. I hate to see anyone fail. I hate to see anyone lose, that’s my nature. Alberto Gonzalez came from an immigrant farm worker family and he managed to go to law school, practice law, and rise to Attorney General of the United States. That is quite an accomplishment. No matter what he did in his tenure as Attorney General, he still held the office. That’s the story of America.

Too bad Gonzales got hooked up with George W. Bush. He probably would have never seen such high office if he wouldn’t had met Bush though. He probably realizes it might have been far better if he never had met the man. Alberto Gonzales will be remembered as an attorney general that really couldn’t grasp what the position he took entailed. He could never stop being George W. Bush’s personal attorney and protector. He could never quite grasp that the position he held required him to be free and independent of the executive branch, that he was now working for the American people. He still believed he was doing nothing wrong.

Maybe he felt that by helping Bush he was helping the country. If that was the case, the sickness of the neo-con ideology destroyed his career and his place in history. The truth is, maybe he doesn’t know it now, but to distance himself from Bush and the others that feel that their view of America’s future is right maybe the best thing that ever happened to him. I know it’s the best thing for the country.

Too bad some men and women believe they must put themselves is a place that is above the rest of us. When the mindset that “we know better” than the people we are working for, anything is on the table. These people in the White House and to a great degree Congress must realize that they work for the people. Their views, while sometimes admirable, unless they represent those that elected you, are only that, your views. Unless you are doing the peoples work by representing what they feel, you are not doing your job.

The President once said that he doesn’t run the country according to the latest opinion polls. The trouble with that mindset is that he’s just dead wrong. He is not above the people. When the war in Iraq has a 26% approval rating, he must be held accountable to the people. When 2/3 of the nation disagree with his policies, than he must take that into account. Its called democracy, If he doesn’t like it, than he should go and find another country to be president of, this country doesn’t accept his view on opinion polls. This country deserves better than what the Bush Administration has given us. That’s the way I see it.
