Obama's amazing reception in Europe signifies what most Americans, I believe, do not recognize: that Europe- and the world- still adores the US, despite the egregious faults committed by the Bush administration. But Obama's reception also signifies that Europe craves the US as global leader- but one that truly stands for civil rights, democracy and rule of law, in the face of ascending China and Russia.

The Bush administration's recent call to expand drilling for oil in Alaska and off the coast is inane. It is a vain effort to lower the cost of gas- and minimally at that- and sacrifice sensitive ecosystems at that. But it is also a reckless measure, in that it further entrenches our oil addiction, while so many nations around the globe are already busy preparing for alternative energy sources- and the future.

This article speculates upon this administration's reasons for starting a hugely reckless war with Iran. In light of the obvious sacrifices of such a campaign,the White House must see extraordinary gains at hand. I argue that our Machiavellian executive branch sees Iran as a swipe at emergent global powers Russia and China- thus Iran is no third front in the War on Terror, but a front in a new Cold War of the 21st century.
