I am a retired Career Development Facilitator with 23 years of service who was recently RIF-ed during the reorganization of the Red Cross from my position as Volunteer Administrator/Training Coordinator when Regional Offices were combined into Super-Regional in effort to save money. I continue to be active in Red Cross as a Disaster Services Volunteer. I am also very active in my Episcopal Church Parish.
I got interested in politics when I realized that individuals such as Howard and Roberta Ahmanson were bankrolling much of the turmoil within our church through such organizations as the IRD (Institute for Religion and Democracy) which is neither religious nor democratic. I also became aware that the conservative wing of political parties were manipulating and using fundamental religious groups as a means to an end and I found this mixing of religion and government was a scary prospect.
I also am involved in GLBT rights. As someone who lived through the Civil Rights movement in the South, I cannot understand why we are always fighting the same battle to get rights for the next group: women, religious minorities, racial minorities, now those who are discriminated against due to sexual orientation. It is the same fight. Why do we have to keep fighting it? I saw the Civil Rights fight prolonged unnecessarily because good people were afraid to speak out. I decided then, when I became an adult and in charge of my own life, I would never be guilty of silence in the face of evil.
