I am an expat Oregonian resident of Taiwan, having arrived on the island in mid-January 1979 with a B.A. degree in Chinese from the University of Oregon in Eugene. I was born and raised in Portland, but in many ways consider Taiwan now to be my home. I came here to further fine-tune my skills in conversational Mandarin and study classical Chinese but within a few months sought out employment as a part-time EFL instructor as the limited funds I'd arrived with were rapidly dwindling. This led to an interest and a career for a couple of decades or more in supervising and training fellow EFL teachers from both Taiwan and all of the English-speaking countries while continuing to improve my Chinese. I currently work as a Chinese-to-English translation editor for the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the ROC government.

My personal interests include reading and writing, Taiji-style shadow-boxing and push-hands practice, brainwave entrainment meditation practice, cooking, hanging with like-minded friends and my spouse girl while enjoying fine wine, hanging with my spouse girl while not enjoying bad spirits, the viewing of film in most often the DVD format, occasional trips to Bali, satire and any medium highlighting a sense and an appreciation for the absurd even if it is something that crawls out of my own mental sanctum.

If someone was to hold a gun to my head and insist that I confess my creed or else said gunslinger would threaten to blow my brains out all over the linoleum, I'd have to say, "Well, if that's the case, then I guess I'm a cynical optimist, but go ahead and pull the trigger, I think that you're gonna miss."
