A community organizer and social justice and human rights activist, Laurie has been involved in the health care reform movement, and is passionate about criminal justice system reform, including death penalty abolition and juvenile justice system reform.
She returned last year from living in Europe, where she worked with the Obama campaign and Democrats Abroad. While there, she observed strikingly different models for incarceration, rehabilitation, and punishment, and a different mindset regarding the fair and humane administration of justice. She attended European Commission briefings and proceedings of the Council of Europe and is firmly convinced that there is much the US can learn from looking outside of its borders.
Laurie believes that nothing sways opinion like facts, and that there appears to be a dearth of knowledge on these issues by the average American. She is convinced that the power of information can transcend argument and clearly evidence the arbitrary and discriminatory nature, and deeply flawed and capriciously applied system of incarceration and capital punishment in this country.
