The conventional wisdom is that the 2010 midterms were a GOP blowout of epic proportions - even bigger than 1994. Yes, the party in power nearly always loses seats in the midterms. The unconventional wisdom is that the Dems do significantly better than the recorded vote in every election. There is no reason to suspect that 2010 was any different.

In the five presidential elections from 1988-2004,there were 238 state presidential exit polls.The focus of the evaluation report was on 2004; very few noticed the exit poll results going back to 1988.But some analysts took close notice.And the data revealed that 2004 was not an aberration.Of the 238 exit polls,194 shifted from the Dems to the Repubs. Of the 108 exit polls that exceeded the 2% margin of error,99 shifted Red.
