Now Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the U. of Kansas. 2 tours in Afghanistan in the 60s and one in Libya 72-73. We were in those places when they were relatively peaceful, but we did see two disturbing parades: one of the perpetrators of the Munich Olympic massacre being cheered as they rode down our street in a motorcade, and one with Gaddafi, Anwar Sadat, and Idi Amin in an open car, with the crowd shouting "waheda, waheda, yaa Sadat" (unity, unity, oh Sadat). This was when Egypt and Libya were trying to form a union. I don't know what Idi Amin was doing there.
