Medical Whistleblower Advocacy Network Presents Human-Rights Issues to the OAS-IACHR On February 10, 2017, Medical Whistleblower Advocacy Network presented to the Organization of American States--InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights. The human rights issues presented were about the use of human subjects in medical experimentation and on a patient's right to free prior informed consent for medical treatment. Experimentation in the USA on human subjects is an important human-rights issue.

Hunger Strike - Mother Protests Abuse of Son On Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, Cindi Fisher had decided to go on a hunger strike in civil protest of her son's medical treatment. Western State Hospital has caused a forced separation and is preventing her from seeing her son. On Day 13 of her hunger strike, Cindi Fisher reports that she has lost weight from a beginning weight 175 pounds down to 164-1/2 pounds.

Patients On the Verge of Suicide or Murder Did Adam Lanza's mother know that psychiatric drugs might make her son a killer? There are good reasons for that FDA warning on the very drugs parents give their children multiple times a day. But doctors refuse to discuss the adverse side effects with patients and their families, they down play the real dangers of these psychiatric medications and they often do not inform families of the risk.

US Congressional investigations don't stop abusive rehab centers The US House, led by Congressman George Miller, conducted investigations by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) during the 110th Congress (2008). These uncovered thousands of cases alleging child abuse and neglect since the early 1990's at teen residential programs. Child abuse - no protection and no plausible legal recourse Abuse of children and teens within residential treatment facilities, located in both the US and in other countries that are run by non-profit organizations legally based in the U.S.A., has occurred for more than four decades. In spite of numerous reports from human rights defenders and mandated reporters, there have been no significant changes to stop the practice.

30 Republican Senators Vote to Not Investigate or Prosecute Rape Rape is a crime under international law yet the US Supreme Court made a decision in Circuit City v Adams that undermines effective law enforcement of civil laws. 30 US Senators refused to vote for the Franken amendment which would give rape victims their civil right to their day in court and to see their rapist investigated and prosecuted.

Wasting the Taxpayers Medicaid Dollars on Psychiatric Drugs Based on a national population of 250 million Americans, the annual costs to the Medicaid programs would balloon to approximately 3.7 billion dollars per year to treat schizophrenia alone. That is over ten million dollars per day just in Medicaid expenditures for schizophrenia drugs. We need to more carefully scrutinize Medicaid expenditures for psychiatric medications.

Dangerous Off Duty All police officers bravely face daily the possibility of their own death on the job and also the possibility that they might need to use lethal force against another. The use of the anti-depressant drug Luvox caused a New Jersey cop to go on a killing spree in 2002. FDA black box warnings about violent behavior and suicide do not stop the sale of these medications. When will policy reflect the true reality of these drugs?

Columbine Survivor Warns of Dangers of Anti-depressants Mark Taylor was only a high school student when he had sustained terrible injuries during the violent shooting spree at the Columbine school. Lying on the ground for almost 2 hours before help could arrive. Donna Taylor his mother comes forward to talk about her continuing concerns about the use of anti-depressant and SSRI drugs and their potential to increase violent tendencies in patients.

Rape is classified as an act of torture within international human rights, humanitarian and criminal law. Torture of US Citizens on US Soil Not a Crime? All human rights violations deserve to remedied and prevented and although problems in the USA do not reach the same level as abuses in other countries, the US should fulfill its responsibilities to be in compliance with CAT. What is Informed Consent? Informed consent is a process, not just a formality, and engaging in that process is of the essence of good medical care. A signed consent form is not informed consent. Privacy, Sealed Records and the Public's Right to Know There is a public nature to a dispute in front of a court in spite of the dispute starting originally in a private matter. There has been increasing use of "secret settlements" or agreements between a plaintiff's attorney and the defense attorney to keep certain information from the public. When does the public's right to know, outweigh the privacy rights of the parties involved?
