It's Not Just Trump -- Saudi Arabia Has Been Bribing the US with Arms Sales for Years Saudi Arabia is in the midst of an internal review of the death of Khashoggi. Whispers from inside the kingdom suggest that the final report will say that this was a "rogue" operation, a word introduced into this incident by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump, who has bet a great deal on Saudi Arabia, has been caught flatfooted.

The knife in Iran's back: Trump opens door to chaos Trump's belligerence, the refusal of key countries to abide by Trump's sanctions (including the European Union, but mainly Russia and China), as well as the internal pressure in Iran could very likely create the conditions for a military clash in the waters around Iran. This is a very dangerous situation.

Trump and the Russian Hand U.S. political debate is now structured around the phrase "Russian interference in the U.S. election." There has been no comparable report on racist voter suppression or misogyny. In fact, there is no discussion about these issues at all.

Empire in Decline, Really? The American War Machine Continues to Grow The headquarters of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which oversees operations in Asia, is located in Hawaii. The people of Africa, Asia and Latin America do not want the United States' footprint to be placed so heavily on their soil. It is one thing to have to tolerate bases and joint exercises. It is another to allow the full weight of U.S. imperialism on one's soil.

Trump Has Found a Way to Make Enemies of Breastfeeding Mothers It is plainly obvious that Trump's government is deeply misogynistic. It is not going to allow women to drive this debate. But this is a long-term problem for U.S. policy making -- a problem of being driven by corporations rather than by its own democracy.

America's Reporter: the Hersh Method Over his long career, Hersh has worked for major U.S. publications such as The New York Times and for smaller outlets such as the Dispatch News Service. He did not care where he wrote as long as he could report with freedom and write with his usual bluntness. It was not prestige that Hersh was after, but the story.

How Trump is about to send world oil prices soaring even higher Even if Iran is on solid ground, it would have a difficult time closing the Strait, which -- at its narrowest -- has a width of 55 kilometers. The US naval base in Bahrain is entirely there to keep the Strait open. The possibility of a small war or even a big war is not so far off.

For All His Bluster, Trump is Powerless Against NATO Allies -- Here's Why Is Trump really going to starve NATO and the European alliance? There is no evidence of this. Trump has increased the U.S. military budget by gargantuan amounts -- to the near astronomic levels of close to $800 billion. Trump increased military spending by close to 10 percent. There is no hesitancy to spend money on the military, no desire to shift some of that treasure toward those who are out of work and desperate.

The War of Hunger That Afflicts the World's Poor A stunning 40 percent of all food is lost or wasted. There is more than enough food produced on the planet for all the billions of its inhabitants. Yet, those who have no, or little, money cannot afford to feed themselves. Those without property are fated to starve. The food that cannot be bought is thrown away. War, Climate Change, Money -- these are the engines of hunger.

Trump and His Tariffs rump has now announced a tariff policy on aluminium and steel, which he hopes will redouble efforts by the manufacturing sector to kick-start a languid economy. Trump framed his tariff policy around the framework of national security rather than economics. Other powers, mainly China, he said, were "assaulting our country."

The American Experiment Has Failed in Afghanistan The American project has decidedly failed in Afghanistan. Others are now edging their way into the country, pushing and prodding to see which way matters will turn. Meanwhile, pay some heed to the Afghan people. For them, choices are few; grief is a way of life.

Trump, Year One This year's midterm elections will be fundamental for the resistance to Trump. Each and every one of the 435 members of the House of Representatives will be up for re-election, as will a third of the U.S. Senators. A majority of the Governors in the States will face elections. If the Democratic Party could whittle away at the Republican control of these offices, Trump will be weakened. But it is unlikely.

Donald Trump Has Made America a Laughingstock on the World Stage The media, in a peculiar way, are a perfect mirror of Trump's vanity and myopia. Trump is said to hate reading policy documents. He is pickled in his campaign rhetoric, unwilling to find a pathway from his speeches to policy. The media are much like this. They neglect detailed assessments of policy issues for scandal and celebrity. Trump is their perfect candidate. He gives them sound bites and glamour.

Netanyahu in India: What was swept under the carpet Weapons are at the heart of the relationship between India and Israel. All else is secondary. It would, however, have been too crude to emphasize the weapons deals. Modi and Netanyahu are both showmen. They understand the art of propaganda. To reduce their relationship to brokering for arms deals would not do. They want to be seen as high-minded men who are bringing their countries together for a higher purpose.

Massive Protests Erupt in Iran Against Sanctions and Unending Poverty The current wave of protests is an upsurge against the privations in Iran -- unemployment, deprivation and hopelessness. The sharpness of the slogans -- even against the Supreme Leader of the country -- indicates the level of anger at the failure of the Islamic Republic to deliver the basic needs of a growing and youthful population.

Notes From Europe's African Border Refugees want to make it to Europe, which -- since the early days of colonialism -- has broadcast itself as the land of milk and honey. Old colonial ideas and the wealth of Europe built from colonial labor beckons. It is a siren for the wretched of the earth. It has ended for many Africans in virtual concentration camps in Libya, where refugees that Europe does not want now linger -- some sold into slavery.

Trump as Balfour Many world leaders -- from Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani -- have called Trump's statement a "dangerous escalation." It will only create far more violence. The European Union and the U.N. have roundly condemned Trump's statement.

Puerto Rico: Ruined Infrastructure and a Refugee Crisis Two U.S. Congressmen, Kevin McCarthy and Steny Hoyer, visited Puerto Rico in November to assess the situation. They found Puerto Rico "in a state of frenzied recovery," but with people cut off by destroyed roads and fallen electric lines, with little food and little medicine and "hope for a swift recovery even scarcer." They pledged to fight for more resources for the island.

The Devastation of Puerto Rico The state watches as businesses take their time to do what should be done with speed. Privatization turned over the responsibility to these firms, which are accountable only to their owners and shareholders. The customers, knee-deep in water and without electricity, cannot call to complain. Their phones are not working.

Humanity Is Being Split into Two Groups: The Privileged and the Billions Who Face Plunder, Trauma and Suffering The West's benevolence is now measured in the destructive force of its agro-business and arms sales. The moral compass revolves around Monsanto seeds and Sikorsky helicopters. Trump will send more troops into Somalia. That will be the Western contribution to the hurricane that is sweeping across the planet.
