The knife in Iran's back: Trump opens door to chaos Trump's belligerence, the refusal of key countries to abide by Trump's sanctions (including the European Union, but mainly Russia and China), as well as the internal pressure in Iran could very likely create the conditions for a military clash in the waters around Iran. This is a very dangerous situation.

Empire in Decline, Really? The American War Machine Continues to Grow The headquarters of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which oversees operations in Asia, is located in Hawaii. The people of Africa, Asia and Latin America do not want the United States' footprint to be placed so heavily on their soil. It is one thing to have to tolerate bases and joint exercises. It is another to allow the full weight of U.S. imperialism on one's soil.

Trump has increased the U.S. military budget by gargantuan amounts -- to the near astronomic levels of close to $800 billion. Trump increased military spending by close to 10 percent. There is no hesitancy to spend money on the military, no desire to shift some of that treasure toward those who are out of work and desperate.

Trump, Year One This year's midterm elections will be fundamental for the resistance to Trump. Each and every one of the 435 members of the House of Representatives will be up for re-election, as will a third of the U.S. Senators. A majority of the Governors in the States will face elections. If the Democratic Party could whittle away at the Republican control of these offices, Trump will be weakened. But it is unlikely.

Netanyahu in India: What was swept under the carpet Weapons are at the heart of the relationship between India and Israel. All else is secondary. It would, however, have been too crude to emphasize the weapons deals. Modi and Netanyahu are both showmen. They understand the art of propaganda. To reduce their relationship to brokering for arms deals would not do. They want to be seen as high-minded men who are bringing their countries together for a higher purpose.

Old colonial ideas and the wealth of Europe built from colonial labor beckons. It is a siren for the wretched of the earth. Puerto Rico: Ruined Infrastructure and a Refugee Crisis Two U.S. Congressmen, Kevin McCarthy and Steny Hoyer, visited Puerto Rico in November to assess the situation. They found Puerto Rico "in a state of frenzied recovery," but with people cut off by destroyed roads and fallen electric lines, with little food and little medicine and "hope for a swift recovery even scarcer." They pledged to fight for more resources for the island.
