Building on fear and hatred

Building on fear and hatred
by Robert Thompson

Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), who wrote under the pen-name of George Orwell, gave us a foretaste in his famous work "1984" of the neo-con aims for the U.S.A.   Senator John McCain and Mr Rudolph Giuliani made speeches at the Republican Convention in New York which could easily have been written for them by this brilliant author.

They have both fully understood the possibilities of misleading the public by their deliberate misuse of words, and they have learned to persuade their audience to believe in such concepts (to such as me, pure oxymorons) as "war is peace", "hatred is love" and "democracy means tyranny".

Outside the U.S.A., we are astonished and shocked that vicious persons and groups in your country can be believed when they claim inspiration from Christianity and/or from Judaism.   However, we have fully realised that one thing which must frighten these hypocrites is the desire of genuine Christians and Jews to study and fully to understand their faith including detailed and scholarly exegesis of the Bible.   The institution by these dishonest obscurantists of a particular translation of the Bible into the English language as the absolute literal truth is obvious nonsense to any educated Christian or Jew.

Furthermore, when Senator McCain praised Mr Bush's efforts towards his long-announced "war on terror" he failed signally to tell the world that the Bush administration has not yet done anything whatsoever to fight the roots of terrorism.   This seems so obvious from where we stand.   As for Mr Giuliani, his likening of Mr Bush to Sir Winston Churchill and Mr Ronald Reagan seems an odd mixture.   Sir Winston did at least call for opposition to the one man on whom Mr Bush so closely models his actions, i.e. Mr Adolf Hitler, which thus makes this a most strange comparison.   On the other hand, we can see that Mr Reagan may, in his later days, have been almost as "intellectually challenged" as Mr George W. Bush.

This "Connecticut Dude" also tries to make the world believe that he is a "regular guy" from Texas, rather than the son of a hyper-wealthy New England family, whose fortunes owe much to the support given by his forbears to Adolf Hitler, then considered by them to be the rising star of German politics.   He also continues to give massive moral support to such terrorists as Mr Oussama bin Laden, with the help of his greatly favoured Bible-bender, Mr John Ashcroft.   They have both continually and publicly confirmed Mr bin Laden's views of the "West" and the attitude which every Muslim should have toward it.

If the electorate believes in these men, who are thereby enabled to increase the tyranny which they so clearly seek to impose both on the U.S.A. and on the rest of the world, we shall all suffer tragic consequences.   All men and women of goodwill around the world of all faiths (or none) should therefore hope and pray for your country's future, which is also bound to affect us all.

When Senator McCain says that by making war (carefully avoiding any form of action against terrorist organisations) his candidate is acting to protect your country, what he means is that he is encouraging more and more people around the world to fear and then hate the U.S.A., thereby increasing the dangers to you and to us from these newly recruited terrorists.   Fear and the resulting hatred are bad counsellors when it comes to voting, and the insistence of the Bush re'gime on building their support on them is a serious problem for the whole world.
