Protests outside White House proliferate

On Saturday afternoon, July 8, I visited the White House with my two kids, and we met up with three groups of protesters. Some people
fasting to protest the continued Iraqi occupation, led by Cindy Sheehan's Gold Star Families and Code Pink and involving Dick Gregory and others, were across from the White House in Lafayette Park. They planned to be there for several weeks, then move the operation to the
National Mall.
One interesting aspect of that was that Bush has decided to cancel his month-long August vacation in part due to the Sheehan-led protesters who camp out at the Texas ranch each August, according to one participant. That
would be the first time Bush would lose his vacation since he stole the White House.
The group's web site is here.
Another group had organized protests involving colorful signs in numerous languages and masks of Bush, Cheney and others each Saturday afternoon since March 2005 right in front of the White House. Numerous photos are on the group's web site, including of me and my kids displaying a sign and masks in front of the White House, here - you have to scroll down past an interview with author Howard Zinn.
Another photo of my kids donning their masks with a grim reaper character made the front page of the site here - there are a lot more photos there.....
Finally, we saw the familiar face of Concepcion Picciotto, who has steadfastly maintained a vigil against nuclear weapons in Lafayette Park since 1981. Since Bush entered the White House, she has become more outspoken against the commander-in-thief, even showcasing a photo
that labels him a terrorist. Her site is here.
