Update from the Streets of Minneapolis
By Rob Kall
OEN reporter Kevin Gosztola reports on actions a
::::::::
I just got off the phone with Kevin Gosztola, one of our OEN correspondents covering the street activities occurring during the Republican National Convention.
He reports that it looks like a major action will occur after 5:00 PM.
The word is that after 5:00 PM, no marches will be permitted.
There's a group gathering for an antiwar rally in front of capitol at 4:00 . At 5:00 the authorities to arrest people after 5:00.
It is expected there will be a march after the rally. Riot police are expected to make arrests.
Gosztola also reported:
The students of McCallister College had a student walkout at noon today.
The schools were put on yellow alert, a kind of lockdown drill where students were not allowed to leave their classes.
They came down Cedar st to Kellog and onto Wabeshaw, a leader of the demonstration made a big to-do about telling the people to stay off the street to avoid provoking the police.
The student walkout people are making their way to Harriet Island, where a lot police arrests and detainments have been going on. Colonel Ann Wright and the Backbone campaign will be there, on the island, which they've nicknamed peace island. The backbone campaign, which uses huge paper-mache heads, is parading with a giant head of General Petraeus.
Concerned, Kevin reports "There are no riot gear police at all around these protesters. That's suspicous to me because they riot police have been all over the protesters. So that probably means the police are preparing for an action."
Kevin described what he expects will happen tonight:
"They have a system of flanking the demonstrators on all sides, so, when they tell the protesters to disperse, they have nowhere to go.
If the group of protesters want to claim they have the upper hand, they'll just sit down.
There's another scenario where the police ask the protesters to sit down.
Then in another situation, they are at a standoff, with police and protesters facing each other.
One way to get out is to ask if you are being charged. If you are not being charged, they have no right to detain you.
Update at 4:23 Minnesota time.
The riot police rushed to create a perimeter to usher these two people to the police car.It got really tense as many onlookers circled around the arresting bicycle police. The riot police arrived, and the police on horses came in, right behind the riot police. This upset the antiwar protester. A number of them were shouting at the police, in spite of all the weaponry the police carried.
Now there are 80 to 100 riot police, accompanied by 30 to 40 police on horses and the police are behind the concert stage. The antiwar people have said they are going to march to the Excel center. There are at least 500 police floating around the area, far outnumbering the peace rally participants. There are also national guardsmen here.
As long as the riot police and the horses stand where they are, in the parade rest position, things are very
ALl it takes is one protester to act and the police could start throwing gas at the protesters.
Now, the riot police have fallen back. There was a very tense period of about 20 minutes which could have goten very ugly.
Ultimately, leaders of the demonstration persuaded the shouting protesters who were ready to confront the police, to back down, telling them, "The police are here to draw attention to them, away from our message. Don't get involved with the situation." (where the police were dragging two people to a police car.) The people who were arrested may have been members of the anarchist RNC welcoming committee group.Everything is now back to normal.
But it's not 5:00 yet. And there are hundreds of police nearby.
