"Still more?" said Folkerth. "I'm just gettin' warmed up? Yeah, I've had enough myself. But I'll cap it off with the big hammer. In 1970 we eclipsed the time when the physical system could provide for the desire of humans to populate and consume exponentially. There are limits, and in a sane world, we would have recognized that we had reached those limits. Instead, the gold standard of checks and balances was abandoned and we began shinnying out on that precarious limb of borrowing against the future; big time.

"Our ill fated attempt to grow forever in a world that stubbornly remained the same size had reached the top of that mountain that I talked about earlier.

"So here's the deal, if you agree with me that the U.S. did in fact reach zenith for balanced growth in 1970, after which we have now reached the apex for growth of debt; what is America going to look like from here on out?"

Like a fat man, you cannot keep adding weight without consequences

"This is not small potatoes friends; this is the notable fork in the road that history books are made of," said Folkerth. "We must all consider what M. King Hubbert said, "We are in a crisis in the evolution of human society. It's unique to both human and geologic history. It has never happened before and it can't possibly happen again."

"Since our inception as a nation, we have known nothing other than rapid growth that was supported by massive resources, a small population, and finest piece of undisturbed land on the planet. So then, what will the reverse situation, a non-growth"or worse, protracted growth, future look like?"

Folkerth understands our dilemma better than Obama and the U.S. Congress. You know more than they do, but they stand in the corridors of power--but will not search for solutions because that would entail dealing with reality.
