Very well. We'll meet again later.
(Rosencrantz and Guildenstern bow and
exit.)
(Enter Polonius.)
POLONIUS
(to Claudius)
My good lord.
Polonius, what news do you have?
POLONIUS
Our ambassadors have returned from Norway, and unless my
brain's blade is getting dull, I think I've found the cause
of Hamlet's lunacy.
CLAUDIUS
What? What have you found out?
POLONIUS
Perhaps it's better my lord, to hear the news from Norway,
and then the news about the prince.
CLAUDIUS
Very well, bring them in.
(Polonius exits.)
CLAUDIUS (CONT'D)
(to Gertrude)
Polonius thinks he's discovered the cause of your son's
sickness.
GERTRUDE
I doubt it's anything other than the obvious--his father's
death and the haste of our marriage.
CLAUDIUS
We'll see what he has to say.
(Polonius enters with Voltemand and
Cornelius).
CLAUDIUS (CONT'D)
Good ambassadors! What news comes from our brother in
Norway?
VOLTEMAND
My liege, a most fair return! As soon as the King read your
articles he sent orders to disband the army put together by
Prince Fortinbras. He had thought it was in preparation for
actions against the King of Poland. He grieved that his age
and ill-health have tarnished his performance as a royal, but
he sent orders restraining the prince.
The prince in turn agreed to obey, and to never again marshal
arms against your majesty.
