As faithful and honorable.
POLONIUS
Thank you my lord. When I noticed something between them,
before Ophelia confessed, I let her know Lord Hamlet is a
star outside her galaxy, that a romantic love between them
can never be. I ordered her to admit no messengers, receive
no tokens, and being rejected, the prince fell into the
depression whose madness we now all mourn.
CLAUDIUS
(to Gertrude)
What do you think?
GERTRUDE
It could be. The death of his father and now this combined
would be enough for anyone, even a prince.
I'm certain I'm correct, and given what we know, I'll soon
get to the truth, even if hidden in the center of the Earth.
CLAUDIUS
What's your plan to find it?
POLONIUS
He paces about here in the lobby, sometimes for hours.
GERTRUDE
Yes, he does.
POLONIUS
One thing we might do is place Ophelia here, while we remain
out of sight behind a tapestry. If he loves her not, and
it's not the reason for his fall, we'll know.
CLAUDIUS
We will try that.
(Enter Hamlet, reading from a book.)
GERTRUDE
Look, here he comes just now.
POLONIUS
Please--away--I beg--both of you! Allow me to engage.
(King, Queen, attendants exit.)
POLONIUS (CONT'D)
(approaching Hamlet)
My good lord, Hamlet. How are you?
HAMLET
Well God have mercy.
