Now for another twist. At the ward I was working, the ward leadership had voted to go against the state committee's endorsement of the Lt. governor. Rather than supporting the incumbent, they were supporting my favorite candidate, who I'd canvassed side by side with in downtown Doylestown, the county seat for my county, Valerie McDonald Roberts. It made sense, she was a great, dynamic candidate and... African American...in an almost entirely African American district.
Lesson learned: In spite of the state Democratic committee endorsement, it IS possible to persuade ward leaders, maybe even county party leaders to go against the tide, to literally paste in, as they did in Mt. Airy, a different candidate's name over the one the "machine" has endorsed.
I was just on the phone with someone supporting progressive candidates in CA. The endorsements are already in and the state party people have endorsed republican lite, non-progressive incumbents. Maybe they can take a lesson from my experience and persuade ward leaders to paste in their progressive candidate's name. Maybe, by the next election, they'll start running progressive candidates for committeeperson. Remember, a lot of those post go unopposed. A little effort can make a huge difference.
