Progressive activists can take a lesson from them AND Cindy Sheehan and either replace or force to the left right leaning candidates of any party.
It starts simply by asking who can stand up to run in the primary. It might be you or someone you work with, or someone you've canvassed or phone banked with. What's that-- you haven't canvassed or phone banked? Well, it's never too late to start. Plan on doing it in the next 15 months.
As I close this article, Bush is in his new Whitehouse press room, pitching his latest pile of bullshit about Iraq. I wonder if he's met this morning with any historians who have coached him on how to extricate himself from what seems a certain fate-- that he will be looked upon as the worst president in the history of the USA.
He is using the same old talking points. Watch to see if your congressperson uses the same ones-- any of them, including "support the troops." WE know that the best way to support the troops is to get them out of Iraq right away. The members of the house can do that by refusing to fund the military any more until the troops are removed. The right wingers in both parties, and the cowardly invertebrates will say that this is letting the troops down. The representatives with courage will stand up to them and laugh, mockingly, calling them the liars and failures, the sellers out to corporations and special interest groups who back Bush and this misguided, unjust, failed from the start war.
Boehner calls Republicans who oppose the war "wimps." The real wimps are the people who keep backing Bush, who keep backing a war that has already been lost. The real wimps are the cowards who can't face the sad reality that we have lost over 3500 troops for a war they should never have been sent to. The real wimps are the chickenhawk chickenshit suits who are trying to protect the the rightwing image of strength and protectiveness, that most Americans now know is an empty chimera.
The real wimps are afraid to take the risk of doing the right thing. The real wimps are hiding behind their party position, on either side, which has still failed to end the war. The leaders are taking the risk of being accused of let letting the troops down. the real people of courage are the ones who are willing to be called wimps by party hacks like John Boehner.
There are Democratic and Republican politicians who are acting from courage and integrity and there are Democratic and Republican politicians who are acting in response to the fear that their jobs are at risk. Both are better than those who are failing to act, failing to do their jobs of representing the wishes and best interests of their constituents. That's why there are primaries and elections.
