Mandane continued. "Of course I had heard of my father's visions. Everyone in the castle had heard the stories and although no one ever told me, I heard the servants discussing them often enough. The story goes that my father had a dream shortly after my birth. In this dream, I urinated so much that it flooded Ecbatana [15] and all of Asia. My father called in the wise men of Magi (wise man) [16] to interpret this dream for him. After a few days they returned with the interpretation of my father's dream. It was said that one day I would have a son who would overthrow him and take over the entire Median Empire. My father loved me so much, he would never hurt me, but I would often see him staring at me silently, looking as though his thoughts were a thousand miles away."
"Probably my father was fearful, but he never said anything to me; and I was a child, so I took his love for granted.
"I was raised by a group of servants from birth. These same servants are with me in Anshan now. When I reached the age of five they brought in the lady Governess, Magizadah [17], to teach me."
I interrupted her. "You had a fortunate childhood, My Queen. Were you fortunate enough to retain your servants and governess when you left your father's home?" If Magizadah was here, my plans would have to change. I had not taken their magic into account and I was sure even a low level Magi would see through my ruse easily enough. I was not prepared to make myself known just yet.
"My servants are here with me, they will stay with me wherever I go. My father refused to allow Magizadah to come with me when I married. I do miss her. It pains me to think of her so far away, for I love her so. She was the first to tell me outright about my supposed destiny. It was not until I met Prince Cambyses of Anshan at my family's mountain home that the rumors and talk began to surface again. Cambyses and I were instantly drawn to one another, and knowing a marriage would lead to a strong political alliance, my father was very much for the idea."
"Our wedding was joyous, the celebration lasting for several days and nights. The dahualoo zorna (a musical instrument) was played by many different groups of musicians, while Cambyses and I joined the bridal party, and we danced in circles around the large drum. The atmosphere was full of joy and I had no reason to suspect anything but happiness would come of our union."
After short time of joy, we had a son but my father took him and we have been told that we will not see him again. We are without hope; we have passed five painful years so far without any news of our son.
I, the spirit of the Airyanem Vaejah nations, looked at her sadly and said, "I will go back to Atashgah, the place for worship, to pray for the safety of your son, and I will visit you and your husband before leaving Anshan." She thanks me and asked the servant to take me back to Atashgah.
After few days I, the spirit of Airyanem Vaejah nations, requested a meeting with both King Cambyses and Queen Mandane of Anshan; the meeting was arranged in their private quarters. I saw that King Cambyses was greatly distressed; he was devastated for his son. He greeted me quietly and thanked me for visiting them. I told them that I had dreamt that your son is alive and happy. In my dream I saw him coming home to you which will make the entire nation happy. Have faith and be patient; Auramazdà will help both of you to get through this terrible time in your lives. I thanked them for their hospitality and then left them.
