Surprisingly, to counter today's
reality of Justice White's concern, help has come to us from Canada through the thinking of
Kalle Lasn, the provocative anti-corporatist founder of Adbuster. While tiny,
this Canadian magazine, known for its skewering attacks on capitalism and
corporate America, has a progressive following in many parts of the world. A close follower of the Arab Spring, last
June, in an e-mail to subscribers, Lasn said "America need its own Tahrir". In recognition of the bankster's role in our
economic collapse coupled with their being rewarded for their failures with
taxpayer bailout funds, Lasn thought it timely to consider seizing control of
the financial district in NYC. Micah
White, activist and senior editor of Adbuster, living in Berkley, CA, suggested a name for the effort; thus
Occupy Wall Street (OWS) was born. In a
later e-mail, a call to occupy went out and September 17 was established as the
date.
While leaderless,
the OWS movement continues to strengthen. Its current purpose is not political per se, that assuredly will come
later. The current purpose, it seems to me, is to heighten the public's awareness
of the great inequities suffered by the vast majority of Americans caused by
the corporate intervention into government affairs. The fact that more and more
of the public are frustratingly aware of these inequities is evident from the near
two thousand Occupy affiliates that have sprung up in the country and throughout
the world.
There is a plan
though. Beginning July 4, 2012, a national general assembly is to be held in
Philadelphia. Occupy affiliates throughout the country will be sending
delegates to this assembly. From it, there seems a certainty that objectives,
goal and demands along with plans for achievement will be developed. The
reciprocal relationship between we the people and government and between
government and we the people is gone. It must be restored. It cannot be
restored without the removal of corporate special interests from the electoral
process. It cannot be restored without one or more Constitutional Amendments,
amendments which Congress could propose but will not.
The current
electoral process is rigged in favor of the congressional incumbents and
corporate special interests and against we the people. A national convention must be held in
accord with Article V of the Constitution which reads in part: "Amendments may be proposed by either two-thirds of
both houses of the United States Congress or by a national convention. This
convention can be assembled at the request of the legislatures of at least
two-thirds of the several states".
While more than
two-thirds of the 50 states have submitted several hundred amendment proposals,
Congress has never called a national convention. Congress continues
apprehensive about anyone but themselves proposing amendments. The people, through the states, would
undoubtedly deny Congress some of the power, perks and privileges currently
enjoyed.
Currently, while
citizens are ruled by government, government is not ruled by its citizens.
Government by and for the people is a sham. National elections are meaningless.
The country is devolving to a third world status. Even our national sovereignty
is eroding. The last time we had a revolution in this country it took 20 years
to start it, eight years to fight
it, and still another six years to fully implement a new government. This time
around, we do not have that much time and we do not choose violence as our
path.
Stephen Black's
Op-ed of November 26 published in the Hendersonville, NC Times-News, They're
scaring the devil out of the greedy,
stated , "Unless
the present path of greed and wealth steamrolling over the have-nots is
changed, our great nation will die in anarchy...(and)... about today's anti-greed
protests: Unless we change direction, folks, you ain't seen nuthin' yet."
OWS offers the
only peaceful process for a timely people's revolution against the current
government's antagonism towards its people. Thomas Jefferson said, "Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments
long established, should not be changed for light or transient causes; and,
accordingly, all experience (has) shown than mankind are more disposed to suffer
while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to
which they are accustomed."
