When it comes to real men, men who have shown great courage in the face of enormous risk to their future lives and freedom, we live in times when some of the most courageous are LGBT.
Today, Bradley Manning announced he considers himself to be a woman and that she would like to be referred to as Chelsea E. Manning, with female pronouns. She released this statement: "As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me, "I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition."
"I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun (except in official mail to the confinement facility),"
"I look forward to receiving letters from supporters and having the opportunity to write back."
Glenn Greenwald is a gay man who has demonstrated enormous, heroic courage and integrity as a journalist and truth-teller. His parter, David Miranda, was recently detained by British agents when he was passing through Heathrow Airport on his way from Berlin to Buenos Aires.
I'm not really sure if it is politically correct to put together an article like this. But as far as I'm concerned, these are the kind of real men we need a lot more of in America. I am so grateful to the the courageous acts these heroes have taken.
