This article is being written to justify my compromise
Petition for a solution to the problems of the 2nd Amendment. This is a
solution which I have heard Thom Hartman suggest in one of his broadcasts. I
picked it up with great enthusiasm and started this petition. (Petition
Demand legislation for gun registration! Responsible Gun Ownership Change.org
http://chn.ge/1NWsvsw ) Following are
some of the problems we are faced with, and reasons this compromise may be just
the right way to go.
Large corporate interests and right-wing republicans do
not want to see gun control of any kind for two reasons:
1.) They do not care if ordinary citizens shoot one
another. "Private property defense" has been the calling rally justifying 2nd
Amendment rights. Sounds good. Shoot the burglar that breaks into your home?
That's okay, right? Defend your good government from "terrorists." Also sounds
good. But don't we pay taxes for a police force more capable of doing that than
we are? Does not our government exist to protect us from criminals and
terrorists? Anyway, the powerful supporters of the 2nd Amendment do not really
care if a burglar breaks into your home any more than they care if corrupt
banking results in foreclosure of your home. They do not really care if we
shoot each other in the streets. What they do care about is defending a
government that they, the Plutocracy, owns and controls.
2.) Good government has already been overthrown by this
Plutocracy. This is partly due to militias supporting political campaigns
throughout history. In actuality the a history of forming militias has been for
the very purpose of putting down citizenry that rebel against corporate
interests and their "private property." A history of militias is an interesting
read (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia ), but what I want to write about here, in support of my gun control
petition, is how we find PRIVATE militias in present day America. Wealthy
organizations or groups can afford to hire private people to membership in their
militias, something the ordinary citizen cannot afford to do. The ordinary
citizen is limited to isolated terrorist activity, (freedom fighters), but large
money interests can hire hundreds of "guns" to defend their big money
interests. Witness the militia support that came to the aid of the rich Nevada
rancher Cliven Bundy. Who has the money to hire those militias? Your guess,
but I suspect Koch organizations. See: Nevada Congressman Seeks Probe Of Armed
Militia Operations At Cliven Bundy Ranch
http://huff.to/1Niamnd .
Of course, historically, many militias have been formed
by government, for good or bad reasons depending on your point of view. But big,
powerful militias can only be formed by those who have the means to pay for
them. These are the main reasons why it has been difficult to get meaningful gun
control. The NRA is a lobby that gets its main support from people with a lot of
money to contribute to the lobbying efforts to continue "open carry" in most
states. You often see the militia type people out in the streets
openly carrying guns, especially at political meetings. But rarely if ever do
you see black people or other ordinary citizens or occupy-type protesters openly
carrying guns. If you do, the police would find a way to stop them. The riot
cops, (defenders of the Plutocracy), would come out in force. And, of course,
the right-wing militias will help put them down too.
We certainly cannot fight these interests by force with guns or grab away all guns in circulation. But at least we should try to get gun lobby to compromise with us to the extent I am requesting in my petition. We simply must becertain gun owners are competent to use guns, that the guns are registered
or licensed so that those who own them can be identified, and that those who
have licenses will also carry liability insurance in case some innocent person is injured by
them. This, I believe, is the best we can do about the problem of our citizenry
being placed in harms way by the 2nd Amendment.
