Exit Polls, Canvassing, Counting Chickens-- with Pictures

This morning, I started off, after taking care of email and the website, by going to vote. We (my 23 year old son and I) had to vote on new, well, actually, used, but new to us, electronic voting machines, reputedly the worst ones around. They were used because some other state had dumped them. Then, when we walked out, after pushing the green VOTE button, I saw an exit poller. (pictures taken by cell phone) She was holding some kind of device for recording data that said CBS on it. Sure enough, she was there as a paid exit poller for CBS. She didn't ask me. She was randomly, using some algorithm, asking people. Apparently, most people were disappointed they didn't get a chance to participate. A few things made me wonder. -she was doing exit polling at a predominantly republican (2 to 1) district. -she was standing next to the republican committee person, so she could see the people accepting literature from the republicans. Interesting. Then, I spent four hours today, canvassing for GOTV-- to get out voters. I showed up at the county Democratic headquarters, cellphone ready for phone banking, but I was directed to a staging area in a parking lot at the Delaware Valley College, less than ten minutes away. My attitude was, "put me to work doing what needs doing." They said they could use me to do canvassing for GOTV, and they gave me Plumsteadville. I paired up with another volunteer. Good thing. The target was fairly rural. We encountered at least 15 deer, several vultures and some chickens. The chickens were wandering around one of the homes we were sent out to hang voting lit on. Not one pair of houses was close enough so we could go to two houses from one car stop. Numerous times, we were driving up gravel driveways at least a quarter mile long. Only one house had dogs big and ugly enough (pit bulls) to give me pause, but after watching their tails wagging, I took a chance and survived. Only one house put me in contact with a nasty right wing woman who told me to take my literature and get out. With all the driving between lit drops, it took a long time, but we did find some people who we might have helped to make a difference in deciding to make the trip to the polls. At the staging area, there was plenty of action-- loads of people, mostly twenty somethings. Enthusiasm was up. The signs were for Patrick Murphy. The lit was for Murphy, Rendell and Casey. Now we sit back and wait. I haven't made up my mind whether I want to go to the campaign headquarters hotel to celebrate/mourn, with the troops.
