Spring Equinox & Libra Full Moon, 2008
Happy Spring!
Spring arrives on Wednesday March 19th (10:49 pm)Pacific time and Thursday March 20th (1:49 am)Eastern time this week. This is the day we mark the balance of light and dark, with the daylight hours now growing longer until the Summer Solstice. The Vernal Equinox has always been celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere as the return of life, and so we celebrate Easter, Passover (later on in April this year), Purim and the Persian New Year. The first Full Moon of Spring comes 2 days later on Friday, March 21st at 11:40am PDT and 2:40 pm EDT. The Sun goes into Aries on the Equinox and the Moon goes into Libra Friday morning.
Aries is all about finding our own identity, passion and purpose in life. It's where the spark of life ignites for each of us, where we are willing to take risks, to begin something new. Like the Fool in the Tarot, we have to trust blindly to our instinct for LIFE. Libra is about what worth our purpose holds for others. How are we received? Who are our partners in this journey through Life? Libra wants to balance Self and Other, with fairness and justice. How do we take other people into consideration when we have goals to achieve? Desires to manifest? Look at our leaders – Aries is all about leadership – and see how they're doing regarding relationships, fairness, justice and honor. Is their passion and purpose to serve themselves or to serve the people? Don't we need a new vision of leadership? Not only in our elected officials, but in ourselves?
Aries also asks us to consider how we see ourselves. Where do we find our sense of Self? In the Ego, with its petty desires, or through the Self, which serves the Soul? Are we arrogant? Self-effacing? Assertive? Aggressive? Balanced? Open? Our Aries sense of self comes from different parts of our lives. Where is Aries in your chart? Our sense of others – Libra – is in the opposite house. What areas of your life will this full moon affect? For example, Aries is in my 11th house of hopes and dreams and friendships – as well as how I can contribute my creative vision to the collective. So that's where I come alive each year – working on how I can bring my vision of life into line with Collective needs. Libra is in my 5th house of creativity. Will my emotional needs be met if my creative projects find outlets through my 11th house goals? Find out from your chart where these new energies arise each year. They are your starting point for each year's new growth.
The rulers of Aries and Libra are also involved in this Full Moon. Mars rules Aries and Venus rules Libra. Mars is back in Cancer, a water sign, where Mars was when it went retrograde last November. During this retrograde period, Mars opposed Pluto, offering us the chance to align our ego desires with the greater imperative for personal evolution. Mars in Cancer focuses on our desire for family, for nurturing, for emotional security. Mars in Cancer wants to take care of those he loves. In this sense, he is fulfilling his original purpose. The Roman God Mars was a defender of the City and Family, the God who grappled with whatever obstacles or issues confronted him. This is an important element of the Masculine spirit, just as important as the need to assert, to focus on goals, and to individuate.
Venus is the ruler of Libra, and she is now traveling through the water sign of Pisces. Venus shows us how we connect, love, listen and create beauty in our lives. Venus can operate at her highest vibration in Pisces, showing unconditional love and compassion for the world. But don't forget that Venus' Greek counterpart – Aphrodite – was born in the foam of the ocean (Pisces). So Venus in Pisces can open us to the stirrings of the collective unconscious. Just think Mermaid! Venus can take us through the realms of the Imagination to find new, creative ways to connect with other people, other realms of consciousness, and new creative ideas. Venus is close to Uranus, ensuring that we will find our freedom once we discover what we really love.
