I’m a baseball fan, always have been. My favorite team is the hated New York Yankees. We have a pretty strong squad (A-Rod, Jeter, Posada, Damon, Abreu) even though we haven’t accomplished much in October in 8 years. Still, on opening day I don’t have to hear that my third basemen is Mike Lamb; and my shortstop is Cesar Izturis. On opening day the hope is there that my guys can win it all!
Around the same time the Yanks won their last World Series (2000) I joined another team: the GOP. I did what I was supposed to: I voted for Bush twice, I voted Republican in the senate races and I called for the killing of all Muslims after 9/11 (we’re not there yet but the voters are pulling for the right guys this time). When it was discovered that Iraq had WMDs I was a vocal supporter of the invasion.
Recently I made a decision to start thinking for myself and not let radio-host drug-addicts form my thoughts for me. I bought a pocket-sized Constitution and actually read it. Around this time I caught a little of the GOP debate in South Carolina and I heard this guy Ron Paul talking about blowback and how the terrorists are here because we are over there. I scratched my head for a second, and then Rudy Giuliani piped in that Ron Paul had just spoken treason. In the coming weeks every GOP talking head and the rest of the candidates made it clear that we were being targeted for our freedom and wealth (even though the CIA, the 9/11 Commission, and even Bin Laden himself said it was because we have troops on sacred Muslim soil). OK, but Switzerland is free and prosperous; why has nobody ever attacked them.
It is eight months later and the field has narrowed down to five. We have 3 liberals (McCain, Romney and Giuliani), one theocrat (Huckabee), and one Constitutionalist (Ron Paul). If I need to explain why McCain, Romney and Giuliani are liberals you have joined this game very late.
Let’s take a look at the liberals: This is the team the GOP leaders want you to choose from. Just take a look. The GOP could care less if they elected Hugo Chavez as long as they can beat the democrats. I’m sorry, but all I see are democrats. Not only democrats, they’re liberals! This is your best to beat the dreaded democrats? Any one of these guys could be a democrat.
Then we come to the most entertaining. Why is Huckabee a theocrat you may ask (only if you are Hellen Keller)? Well this is the man that said he wanted to change the Constitution to fit god’s word. But where is the love? He has all these “evangelicals” voting for him yet he has no money! If they really loved him they could give him some of the money that’s paying for the pastor’s wife’s new Mercedes S Class. That would be nice!
Then we are left with Ron Paul, the scholarly nerd from Texas. He is such a threat to the system, that even though he is the biggest GOP fundraiser, he can’t buy a lick of airtime on the Mainstream Media broadcasts. He has come in second in the Nevada and Louisiana primaries and most people don’t know his name.
He is a finance expert, a foreign policy student and his background is spotless (except of course for the newsletter hit-piece by Kirchick, see my “Unholy Alliance” article for more on that).
Nobody in the GOP is willing to give him a chance although he is the only anti-Iraq war candidate running on either side and polls say 70% of the voters want the USA out of Iraq. He is the only chance to beat the democrats! The only logical conclusion that can be drawn is that the GOP has too much invested in our military industrial complex to allow Ron Paul a sniff at the nomination. C’mon, he wants to close all bases around the world and not police it.
Follow the money, who is gaining the most from this war? A trillion dollars a year is spent and where does that money go? It goes to those who supply the military. We are in 180 nations around the world for reasons that escape me (what is the strategic significance of an Army base in Heidelberg, Germany?) and each of those bases needs food, weapons and transportation. Who gets that money?
If you are still wondering why Ron Paul is not “electable” I’m sorry. You are probably like I was 8 months ago. You haven’t asked yourself why this government is BORROWING trillions and fighting a “War on Terror” against a group that numbered in the 2,000 range and was almost destroyed in 2002, but is now receiving new recruits everyday. You have probably asked, “What good is money if we’re all dead?” All the while China, Saudi Arabia and other countries are buying up American companies and American soil. You probably shout down the “peacenik”, traitors who want to see an end to interventionist foreign conflicts by saying, “If we don’t fight ‘em over there, we will fight them over here!” All the while the information points to them being here because we are over there.
Thanks GOP! You’ve CHOSEN a great group for us to pick from. What will the deficit be 4 years from now?
