Born in Zahlé, Lebanon, in 1960, Chawky Frenn lived his formative years in a country of beauty, mysticism, and conflict. He witnessed six years of civil war, the devastating images and consequences of which would powerfully influence his life and work. He emigrated to the United States in 1981.
In 1985, Frenn received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA, and in 1988, he completed his MFA at the Tyler School of Art of Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, finishing the second year of graduate studies at Temple Abroad in Rome, Italy. He taught at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, MA; Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA; and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in Edinboro, PA. He is currently Associate Professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
Frenn exhibits extensively, nationally and internationally. He is the author of two new books 100 Boston Painters and 100 Boston Artists, published in 2012 and 2013 by Schiffer Publishing.
