iPhoneDevCamp at Adobe SF
It all started with a twitter.
Open source evangelist Chris Messina asked the world
where to host iPhoneDevCamp from July 6th-8th. I wrote
back, "What about Adobe?"
Adobe loves Web developers!
=========================
http://barcamp.org/iPhoneDevCampAdobeFAQ
Q: Does this mean that the iPhone supports Flash?
A: We suggest that folks speak to Apple directly about
what technologies the iPhone will support and
integrate. Our relationship with Apple continues to be
strong. Naturally we believe that support for Flash is
essential for any mobile device that wants to deliver
a great experience for customers.
Q: Will Adobe people be on site to speak and answer
questions?
A: Adobe people will be in attendance, participating
like everyone else. Although there is no official
presentation planned at this time, all questions
related to the use of Adobe products will be
cheerfully answered.

“Morfik claims this is the first development tool for
the iPhone.
Up till this point, no one had announced a development
tool for the iPhone - although there have been
suggestions by bloggers that Adobe AIR and Google GWT
might become iPhone development platforms. However, it
seems Morfik is the first to do it.”

“Have you started ‘hacking’ on the iPhone yet? We are
pushing on the development pretty hard in preparation
for iPhoneDevCamp next week... Drag and drop, and
other behaviors based on picking up mousemove events,
don’t work. CSS-based element drag and drop doesn’t
work either. Dragging one finger around the iPhone’s
version of Safari causes the window to scroll, and
that’s it. I assume that scroll events do work. I’m
sure somebody is already working on a version of drag
and drop based on window scrolling...You do not get
“mousedown” when you touch the screen. You get
“mousedown” and “mouseup” at the same time when you
release your finger. The “mousemove” event does not
seem to fire at all. There is no way to handle
double-clicking because that is the action for
zooming, and calling event.preventDefault() doesn’t
seem to override that...”
Phone Problems For Businesses
The iPhone's inability to sync with current corporate
e-mail servers means trouble for the 9-to-5 crowd.

Here are some things I have read and heard over the
past day about iPhone experiences that the iPhone ad
will never tell you.
1. Text input takes forever. Forget about IM or
email.. stick to SMS.
2. Unlike other phones, you cannot SMS while not
looking at the phone... so forget about SMSing from
the last bench in the class during the boring lecture.
3. The EDGE network is painfully slow. The ad shows
you zooming and panning a newspaper front page. It
never shows the user loading that page... it will take
a whole whopping 2 minutes, and even iPhone cannot
churn out enough profit to buy such a big ad spot on
network TV. I am sure most iPhone buyers are broadband
addicted already. Imagine their withdrawal symptoms.
4. The demo at the Apple store in this area was
running WiFi, they never told their potential
customers. Someone at the store even mentioned that
the WiFi was installed just the day before... hmmm,
makes me wonder why.
5. The real experience of viewing a webpage on a
small screen is still far from perfect. Imagine a
superfast car, that can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds
flat. Except you need to start from 0 every 4 seconds.
Yes, the ad looks really cool zooming and panning and
seeing things exactly as the publisher intended.
Except, imagine zooming in to read the text on a menu,
and then be able to see only three items without
scrolling. It will just not work!
6. People have reported browser incompatibilities
with Javascript (used on a lot of dynamic websites
these days) because Apple decided to use Safari, its
own home brew web browser on the device. Imagine how
iPod users would have felt if Apple decided to only
have AAC , its own audio format support, and not do a
good job of playing MP3s.
7. People have reported that normal headphones do not
work with iPhone. And now, Apple is selling a
normal-headphone-adapter-for
-iPhone for $10. Nice way
to make money, but again, will not work twice.
8. One of the things that makes a product success is
the support system around it of all the accessories,
spares etc. iPod has a very well developed accessories
program, and it seems not all of those would work with
iPhone, even though the bottom of the two look the
same. But really, is that unexpected given even
headphones are not compatible? Even more money making
seems to be in the plans here.
9. Seems the iPhone will not work till you activate
yours with a Cingular plan. And, as expected, you can
count on any mobile carrier to screw up in a royal
fashion. Cingular has delayed people's activations by
hours, meaning some people who got their phones
yesterday are still not able to use it today. The term
floating among those circles is 'iBrick'. Better
still, the step of the process for users is to
deactivate their old cell phone. Means many users are
sitting and waiting without their old cell phones,
waiting for the new one to rise to life. Given that
impulse buys require instant gratification, I smell a
lot of goodwill burning.
10. After waiting in line for the entire day, when
the buyers actually get their device, they are getting
disappointed to find out that it cannot make coffee,
or bake pizza, despite a $600 price tag and a 2 year
commitment to live with Cingular.
As you can see, the morning after is going to be
pretty depressing for all those who appeared on the
the most recent version of "geeks gone wild". And
Apple is likely to take the hit.
As for me, now you know why I got my new Blackberry
8800 yesterday, the same day iPhone launched.

Peeyush, good honest review! My issues with the iPhone
has to do with lack of basic functions, now standard
even on cheap cell phones. No voice dialing, no video
capture, can’t use MP3 ring tones, no user replaceable
battery, just to name a few. These lack of features
are discovered after the phone is purchased. I share
your concern about surfing the net on a 3.5” screen
being unreasonable, looks like 5 minutes of pleasure
and 2 years of misery.
