But do YOU have an exit plan? It doesn't matter that you didn't start this. It doesn't matter that you are a patriot, that you love your country. You should have an exit plan.
The despicable traitor republicans in Congress are selling out America for corporations and pieces of sh*t religious theofascist ministers and their idiot sheep. The United States of America might as well be called the Cororate Parishes of America. And if you are reading this, if you've registered (or maybe, if electronically, voted) Democratic or Green, Libertarian or anything other than Republican, you need an exit plan.
You should read Sinclair Lewis's IT CAN'T HAPPEN Here. Consider it required reading in the end times of USA democracy. It hasn't quite happened yet, but it's looking more and more like a lot more of IT has HAPPENED than we might have thought.
The end is near. This is not apocalyptic talk. The Alito hearings begin this week, and they are clearly going to decide if this country can be salvaged. Forget about Roe v. Wade (for a moment) because Alito will give Bush a free pass to do whatever the hell he wants, regardless of any laws. Alito is a legal slut, who showed how he would sell his soul and blow off the constitution if it will get him an appointment. His lies about recusing himself if presented with any cases related to stock he held proves he is dishonest. Hiw dues paying membership in a sexist, racist group at Princeton show the kind of character he has.
If Alito is allowed to become a supreme court justice you will need an exit plan. It will be a matter of time. Bush will no longer worry about laws. Rumsfeld will continue ignoring laws the civilized world has adopted. It will be a matter of time until neighbors start watching other neighbors, reporting those who don't show signs of loyalty. It will be a matter of time before teachers are terminated for not meeting secret security regulations, before civil employees with long years of tenure will be replaced with loyal party members.
It will be a matter of time before you will be asked to sign up for a local milita-- strictly for homeland protection, of course. Or maybe you won't be asked. And that's when you should worry, and when you will be glad that you have had an exit plan. It will be a matter of time before it will become just as difficult to leave the US and go to Canada as it is for a middle easterner to enter the US.
You'll want an exit plan once you see clear signs that your website is being pinged by NSA, or your emails have funny extra numbers and addresses in them, because they've been intercepted. You'll want an exit plan when you, or someone you know has been flagged by the TSA as a high risk traveller.
The next few weeks are so important. Alito must not become a member of the supreme court. The message to the congress should be crystal clear. I don't think signatures on petitions or emails to senators will do it. Phone calls will help. But I think it will take huge, mass responses by the people of this country-- tens of millions must get out in the streets and make themselves highly visible. I don't think there's any need to break any laws, but it is essential that we the people make it clear to the congress that an Alito nomination WILL NOT f*cking STAND.
So talk to your local political groups. And talk to your neighbors who aren't activists and tell them that this is more important than their favorite evening TV show, more important than a workout at the gym or, even, for kids, doing homework.
We need so many people out in the streets that the streets overflow. We need to send a message that we are not going to let the law be broken and then have a lying, racist, anti-democracy corporate sycophant who is willing to give all power to a president who is a criminal-- a war criminal mass murderer who should be prosecuted, incarcerated and punished to the fullest extent of the laws he himself has advocated.
Write to your Senators. Contact your local paper and demand that Alito be rejected- with a filibuster if necessary.
And while you're at it, make an exit plan to leave the USA, at some point, when the spying, the religious witch-hunts, the partisan influence on jobs get bad enough. There are already two to three million Americans living outside the US. As things get worse in the US, that number will only grow. Read IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, and have an exit plan. Soon, this may not be the country you thought you lived in.
Meanwhile, in the next two weeks, you should plan to find yourself in the streets.
