ADHD and Me (Pt. 2)
by Kevin Stoda
This, my second attempt to share my story of living with ADHD, was inspired by reading of a 12-year-old's wonderful work, ADHD and Me: A 12-year-old muses about balancing ADHD with her special abilities by Dana Olney-Bell .
In my prior piece, I indicated that I had not been diagnosed with ADHD properly until I was nearly 40 years old. This was when I was back in college in the USA trying to obtain a doctorate at Texas A & M University, where I also taught English at an intensive English program geared to foreign students. (I had already taught in over half-dozen countries outside my homeland by that time, 2000.) At A & M, I was trying to get a doctorate in political science after obtaining previously two MAs and a BA--along witha Kansas teaching certification in ESL, German, Spanish, American History, World History, and Government.
Although I did not succeed past my first year in the doctoral program of my choice in the Political Science Department at Texas A & M University, I was able to use the year (2000-2001) to undertake intensive testing and eventually receive diagnosis (and then confirmation of diagnosis) for Attention Deficit. During that one full-year back in college at TAMU (i.e. the last time I have ever attempted to go to college full-time), I faced several complications because of my years of living with ADHD as a student and teacher.
