Sen. Elizabeth Warren was silenced by an obscure rule after reading parts of a letter Coretta Scott King wrote to Sen. Strom Thurmond in 1986 in which King opposed the nomination of Jeff Sessions for a federal judgeship. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell explained: "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted." He didn't realize it , but he had just coined a new feminist rallying cry. What he presented as a rebuke of Warren's behavior quickly picked up steam on social media, where people used it to highlight powerful women from history who refused to be silenced.
