Physicists have discovered a jewel-shaped geometric object that challenges the notion that space and time are fundamental constituents of nature. This could lead to having to figure out "how the Big Bang and cosmological evolution of the universe arose out of pure geometry." One scientist notes this is "very unexpected from several points of view. The field is still developing very fast, and it is difficult to guess what will happen or what the lessons will turn out to be." Scientists from Oxford, Harvard, Princeton and Cambridge weigh in.
