Gary Rubinstein received a very disturbing training film that Teach for America uses to prepare new recruits. The TFA mission statement does not mention the word teacher or LEARNING. "Young people are given a portrait of a "system" that neglects children, and they are sent like Superman to fix things."I don’t think they should start with the premise that the system is broken, & that the TFA teacher’s role is to somehow single handedly undo the deliberate decisions that have led to this. They need to know that teaching children HOW TO LEARN is very hard, and that EXPERIENCED teachers all over the country are working to enhance learning, despite limited resources. The TFA teacher should realize the NEED TO WORK alongside these other teachers, and to learn from them and hope that they can quickly become like those experienced teachers!"
