Says Ravitch: When we think of the phrase "the American dream," we think about a belief that everyone has a fair chance to better themselves, to get a free education, to land a job that provides them the means to be self-supporting and live in a good home. Behind the phrase is an assumption of fairness and opportunity, of earning good wages for your work and knowing you can take care of yourself, your family, and your old age. That "dream" is slipping away. To understand why, read this important essay-review by economist Robert Kuttner in the "New York Review of Books." It is a review of two books that helps explain the profound transformation of work in our time.
