During the communist revolution, Bolsheviks called for an armed proletariat. After gaining power they imposed a 10-year prison sentence for gun possession. In Nazi Germany, if you weren't sanctioned by the party and were found with a gun you could be shot on the spot.

And for sure, no authoritarian regime would tolerate an organization like the NRA that promotes laissez-faire gun ownership.

The Supreme Court dominated by extremist authoritarian-leaning judges struck down Roe v. Wade on June 24th despite the objection of a majority of Americans. This decision supported by extremist governors who will now criminalize abortion in many States violates the premiere Republican principle that opposes big government. Yet the control of women's bodies is the biggest overreach of government in the history of the United States. It illustrates how authoritarian governments by whim pose a threat to all freedoms.

Yet the embrace of authoritarianism in the U.S. is accelerating and time is running out for action.

That is why it's urgent for a month of teach-ins and write-ins by journalists, teachers, news anchors, radio hosts, podcasters, and even sidewalk soapbox pundits on the left and right who love democracy to explain the dangers of fascism and the values of democracy

July 4th, which commemorates the beginning of American democracy, is a perfect opportunity to begin teaching about the protection of that exceptional initiative. For 245 years American democracy has been a beacon of hope for the rest of humanity. Let's ensure that it does not die.
