If one simply swaps the
parties, giving the Republicans the Presidency and the Senate, and the
Democrats the secret meeting on Inaugural Day, "traitor" and "treason" would be
two of the milder words used to describe the men who met in secret at The
Caucus Room. Special prosecutors, investigative
committees, ethics inquiries, and impeachment proceedings would dominate the
daily news. By now, most of the conspirators would be long gone, if not serving
federal sentences, at least shamed into some liberal think tank, making up new
ways to convince the electorate to vote in their own interests for once. Some
might even have an honest job by now.
The behavior of the
Republicans who plotted this conspiracy barely rises to the strict level of
treason defined in our Constitution, if at all. But it certainly does so in
spirit, and at the least, their conduct should be evaluated by the House Ethics
Committee, and impeachment should be on the table. Their conspiracy against the President and
the people of the country should be ongoing front page news, either through
investigation by a prosecutor, investigation by the House Committee on Ethics,
or through Impeachment hearings. The Republicans certainly would play it that
way. Democrats and Progressives never seem
to get it, though. You do not need to
have enough evidence to win. You only
need enough to justify an investigation.
Once the investigations begin, good things start to happen. An investigation into treason committed by
Republican leaders might well have made them more cooperative with the
President's agenda, since the heart of the investigation would be that they
agreed to oppose any and all bills he proposed, even if taking that position
bankrupted the country and resulted in American military deaths.
Though the vast majority
of Americans favor Democratic positions on the issues, they continue to vote
for Republicans and against their own economic interests. They do this because Republicans lie, and
they lie loudly and often and blatantly.
We progressives, though, would never think to call the conspirators of
Inauguration Day "traitors," and their plan "treasonous," even though it might
rightly be so, because such language frightens us. Once departed from the lips, we know there
will be significant results, and we can never call back words once spoken. We fear the partisan response, when the
partisan response could never get worse than it already is. We have the truth on our side. We must shout
it as loud as the Republicans shout their lies. We must speak the truth as
boldly, courageously, and often as the Republicans proclaim their lies.
The Republican use of the
debt limit to extort other policies from the presidency while the country
experienced an economic crisis and engaged in two wars started by the
Republicans was treason, at least in the spirit of the word, the result of a
conspiracy formed the same day Barak Obama officially became President of the
United States, a conspiracy formed with the intent to achieve political and
economic dominance over the United States regardless of the welfare of the
country.
So there; it is done. The door is breached. The words are loosed upon the world. Let them fall upon those whom betrayed the American people and their President in a time of crisis as thunder serves to warn of the lightning to come. Someday the people will rise in righteous anger and ultimately punish those whom now lie and steal and cheat to gain partisan and financial advantage. There are hundreds more overt acts birthed from the original conspiracy. Help make the case; if you dare. Think like an elephant, not a jackass.
