Or as another cartoon recently read, "Why didn't we report the cancer screening company Cologuard's kickback admission last year? They're one of our advertisers!"
Take biologics like Dupixent and Humira. Sure the ads concede side effects like immunosuppression, opportunistic infections and death but you will never hear from the outlet, "woman dies after taking injected drug." Not only would news outlets lose their advertisers if they reported such a death--or reported a related class action suit against a drug--most drugmaker wrongful death settlements include a gag order: take these millions but zip your mouth. The public is no wiser about the drug risks and the ad gravy train continues for the news outlet.
"Why This Matters"
A final word: In addition to "we," when a news outlet writes "Why This Matters" (or "News You Can Use") it's time for the staff to quit their swivel chair jobs and wait tables at Denny's. What kind of news doesn't matter? What kind of news can you not use?
On top of copying and censoring news, there is an even more outrageous, dangerous and insidious press trend. "Pay us!" the Associated Press--once the gold standard for media reporting even ten years ago--now pleads. We want donations!
Pay for what? News copying, pasting and censoring? New swivel chairs?
