We're not going to make it "back" to any state we remember "before" all this "bad" economic stuff happened. But I have an unshakable confidence that we the people are moving forward to a way that is both old and new - a way that honors love and patience and sacrifice more than gold.
To our brothers and sisters around the globe I say, Peace. As citizens of the world we can no more afford forever warring than we can afford ineffectual governance or over attachment to things. And so, to them we say, peace. We say work with us to find all who do horrible things anywhere and let's work together to contain them.
We must be honest with ourselves. There is not a safe world. The belief that we've achieved it puts us at greater risk and the desire to achieve it imprisons us. Eisenhower said it best, "We will destroy from within what we are trying to protect from without" if we honor safety to too great a degree.
But we can always and ever work to be safer. Safer means knowing not only our friends but our adversaries. It means listening. It means working with. No, we will never work with those who mean us harm, but we must always work with those closest to them. Whether it is their families, their governments, their holy ones; these are our allies. These people share our goals for their sons and daughters. They will be our power.
I close.
I will spend time on my knees tonight asking for the guidance, the strength, the wisdom and the humility to serve you as you deserve. I ask you tonight to consider the America of your highest ideal. And then to ask yourself, "What is my part in creating her?"
