Excerpt from "How do nuclear power plants withstand hurricanes? "Preparation before a hurricane"
The days before a hurricane hits the Earth, nuclear power plant operators take the necessary measures, according the guidelines presented by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and onsite plans for emergency preparations. These include:".
" As a precaution measure, the reactor shall be shut down at least two hours before the hurricane's strong winds arrive at the location. Generally this happens when the speed reaches between 70 and 75 mph (between 113 and 121 km/h).
" Starting 12 hours before a hurricane reaches a nuclear power plant, operators shall begin to send regularly updated reports on the site's conditions to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Should there be energy loss outside the site during or after a hurricane, the reactors will be automatically shut off as a preemptive measure, and emergency diesel generators will inmediately start to operate, in order to supply electric energy to the site's safety systems. Operators can also manually shut off the reactor as a preemptive measure even if there was no exterior energy loss,".

Re: Event Number: 53242- Potential Loss of Offsite Response Capabilities (03.02.18)
Pilgrim Station informed the NRC at 11:15, March 2 (during the height of the storm) that the Commonwealth had told Entergy that: there may be a potential loss of offsite response capabilities due to ongoing severe natural hazard conditions (i.e., major winter storm) along the coast of Massachusetts. According to information received by PNPS, towns within the 10 Mile EP Radius could be hampered in implementing some protective actions specified in the emergency plan.
Despite being told that evacuation and other offsite response was impossible, Entergy continued to operate, generate power and more importantly money, throughout the storm.
Entergy's operating license depends on there being "reasonable assurance that adequate protective measures can and will be taken in the event of a radiological emergency." ( - 50.47 Emergency plans)." [via Mary Lampert]
KUDOS TO YOU FOR THESE ACTIONS
I am very grateful for all the wonderful things you have done for Massachusetts.
Senator Elizabeth Warren and Attorney General Maura Healey, you are both incredible leaders. Wonder Women. Senator Warren, you take on banks, Wall Street, corporations, the Republicans. Attorney General Healey, you file brilliant, righteous lawsuits. Most recently, your office was instrumental in "taking the lead" and working together with the EPA and AG's from all over the country. You just won millions of dollars for Massachusetts in the Volkswagen Mitigation Trust re the VW lies.
Senator Ed Markey, you have worked against nuclear power throughout your many decades in office.
Congressperson Bill Keating, you have "introduced legislation to make nuclear power plants safer by promptly removing waste into storage units."
Congressperson Keating, you and Senators Markey and Warren sent a strong letter on 2/12/18 to the Chair of the NRC saying, "Pilgrim is currently in Column 4 of the NRC's Oversight's Process Action Matrix, the Multiple/Repetitive Degraded Cornerstone Column, which is the lowest safety designation a plant can receive without being required to shut down. Pilgrim must not be allowed to languish in Column 4 for the remaining 18 months of operation ahead of its anticipated shutdown [no later than June 2019]. We share the concern of local residents on the safety of the plant's operations as long as it remains in Column 4"."
