Try to remember… And if you remember,
Then follow!
Try to remember, the kind of September,
When no one wept; except the willow.
Try to remember, when life was so tender,
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember, when life was so tender,
That love was an ember about to billow….
Try to remember… And if you remember,
Then follow!
Deep in December, it’s nice to remember,
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December, it’s nice to remember,
Without a hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December, it’s nice to remember,
The fire of September that made us mellow….
Deep in December, our hearts should remember,
And follow!

The movie version of The Fantasticks released in 2000 after a 5-year wait. It can be seen online at “Fancast” this month “for free” (if you don’t count the limited commercial interruptions); or of course can be rented on DVD. It is well worth watching…. Especially the last few minutes; when El Gallo defines our coming of age for us in his very moving rendition of “Try to Remember”. But please, watch the entire movie: You won’t be sorry!
And try to remember: A time when we were tender and callow... A time when depressions of economy and soul were far ahead of us, when we were blissfully ignorant of the greater evils of the world. A time when our dreams and desires were our guide: When life was “oh-so mellow”…. A time before our hearts’ were hurt, our heads were still a little empty, and the “heavy lifting” of our lives still ahead of us.
… And Follow!
