while I eyed her sister off during Trivial Pursuit,

the smell of chicken soup permeating the flat)

to ever turn anti-semite. And I loved Israel,*

and I hated Arafat, and I hated Mark Knopfler

for wearing Arafat's bandana in concert,

during Dylan's "Jokerman" period,

and I was one of the few

who thought we were in better hands with General Haig

who said he was in charge after Reagan was shot

(not enough, ask me)

by a Manchurian candidate with bucky bucky teeth.

At least, that's how I remember it.

And what good is memory if it doesn't flatter?

Dylan says it's doom alone that counts.

I say it's the baby batter.
