This week The New York Times announced the appointment of that newspaper's fourth public editor, Arthur S. Brisbane, to a three-year term. The NYT public editor acts like an internal affairs division chief. Mr. Brisbane emphasized that one area he will be investigating is how publishing articles for the Web on tight deadlines is effecting The Times's journalistic standards. He should also consider the positive aspects of that relationship.
There is an interplay between the Web and newspapers which can ultimately benefit the public. Readers should be encouraged to investigate stories on their own. Today's news consumers must use multiple news sources and critically evaluate those sources if they wish to be well-informed.
