Despite being a long-standing homeland of anti-semitism, Russia has remarkably good relations with Israel. Putin relies on Israeli hi-tech for many military systems and would like to have that country's help in gaining influence in Persian Gulf kingdoms allied with Israel, especially as regards arms sales.
Nonetheless, Russia recently deployed its most sophisticated fighter aircraft to an airbase in western Syria. Its responses will be watched closely. Israel retains the edge as its aircraft, weaponry, and pilots are superior to anything Putin has -- in the region or anywhere. Syria is a money pit for Iran. Putin doesn't want it to become one for his country too.
