The frightening truth is that, in the 21st century, there is a highly organized and engaged subset of home-grown fundamentalists actively working together to trigger a clash of civilizations based on the Book of Revelation. As we await John McCain’s vice presidential choice, the fact that Hagee acolyte, Joe Lieberman, would even be mentioned as a possibility speaks to the power of the evangelical voting bloc. Likewise, for those who believe the influence of the Religious Right is waning, one need look no further than to last week’s not-so-thinly veiled threat in Richard Viguerie’s “Open Letter to John McCain,” in which he writes, “Poke the base of the Republican Party - the conservatives - in the eye one more time (Senator McCain) by choosing a pro-abortion vice presidential candidate and conservatives will show you that two can play the maverick game. Conservatives are people with proudly held principles. We're now waiting to see if you share our principles.”
There is a significant segment of the population who look to the Rapture as a promise of something far better than their earthly lives promise. Their numbers make up a significant voting bloc and it is to this bloc that Lieberman, Bauer, Parsley and all the others are speaking. And it means they are also speaking for John McCain.
It is time to demand that, no matter on which side of the fence you sit, anyone who actively promotes End Times theology must not be allowed within a million miles of American policy.
The bottom line is this; Mr. Lieberman has chosen to throw his arms around the apocalyptics in a big fat public embrace. What does that say about you, Mr. McCain?
